Every parent wants the best for their child. A bright future is visualized with them setting foot in an ivory tower, the dream of going into college. But as college fees shoot up by the day, it’s not easy to meet these costs. While exploring ways of saving, you might stumble upon two options: a child insurance plan and a children’s education allowance.

Both the options may seem similar but are fundamentally different. Understanding their differences will help you take a step closer to securing your child’s future.

What Is a Children Education Allowance?

Children education allowance is a specific type of allowance given to salaried individuals as a part of their pay slip. The allowance is given to offset the monthly schooling expenses for their children.

How Does It Work?

  • Employer-provided: This allowance is a part of your company’s CTC (Cost to Company). Should you not have this benefit, it cannot be claimed.
  • Meant for school fees: This allowance does not intend to build any corpus or set aside funds for future education needs.
  • Tax benefits: As per the Income Tax Act, 2025, there are tax benefits availed by salaried parents on this allowance.

The benefit of tax relief is available per child, with a maximum deduction of ₹3,000 per month for up to two children. However, these tax benefits are generally applicable in the old tax regime and depend on the tax-saving strategy opted by the taxpayer.

The Limits of an Education Allowance

While it is good to have an extra allowance that comes directly from your salary every month, it cannot build you a corpus for larger needs such as engineering or medical college or even studying abroad.

A children’s education allowance is a perk, which is dependent on your employer. It cannot withstand the test of time, and if you change jobs, it is unlikely that you will get the same benefits again.

What Is a Child Insurance Plan?

A child insurance plan is specifically designed to secure your child’s future educational needs in case of an unfortunate event.

Child insurance plans serve as a disciplined way of building a corpus for your child’s future educational needs while also providing the following benefits:

  • Waiver of Premium: This is by far the most crucial benefit of a child insurance plan, especially the ones that have this rider attached to it.
  • Disciplined Savings: With child insurance plans, you can build a dedicated corpus for your child over a period of 10, 15, or 20 years.
  • Flexible Payouts: Many insurance companies offer you the flexibility of payout upon maturity of the child so that the money can line up with your child’s college fee instalments.
  • Tax Benefits: Premiums paid for an eligible life insurance policy can be claimed as a deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh under Section 123 of the Income Tax Act, 2025.

The maturity proceeds may also qualify for tax exemption under Section 10(10D) of the Income Tax Act, 2025, subject to applicable conditions and terms specified by the insurance company.

How Should Parents Plan for Future Education Costs?

It is not uncommon for salaries to have a meagre amount as an education allowance, which is insufficient to keep up with the escalating education costs. So, to create a robust financial safety net for your child, look at combining your monthly education allowance with a longer-term plan for building a larger corpus for their future educational needs.

1. Calculate the Real Cost of Education

College fees are rising, and it’s safe to assume that the cost of a degree today can almost double by the time your toddler is all set to enter college. Try to estimate the amount that will be required once your child reaches college-going age.

2. Treat the Education Allowance as Daily Expenditure

The education allowance should be treated as a daily expenditure on your child’s education. It can help you with the regular outflows that come with a child going to school or college.

Treat it as a way to reduce your immediate outflow and not necessarily something that can build a corpus for your child’s college fees in the future.

3. Lock in a Dedicated Child Insurance Plan Early

Starting your child’s insurance plan early will help you build a larger corpus by the time they reach college-going age. This is because of the magic of compounding that will give you higher returns on investment (RoI) if you start early.

While looking at a child insurance plan, you need to keep in mind the various add-ons, flexibility of payouts, and waiver of premium benefits, as mentioned above. All the benefits of a life insurance plan are subject to the terms and conditions of the respective insurance companies.

Conclusion

Planning for your child’s education need not be a stressful affair. While children’s education allowance helps you in meeting your child’s ongoing educational expenses, a dedicated child insurance plan will secure their college-going future.

By taking advantage of your company’s education allowance while also building a long-term child insurance plan, you will be setting your child up for the best that life has to offer.
