Editorial Standards
Purpose of the catalogue
The INGOF Public Domain Literature Library exists to make historical texts accessible to readers interested in primary sources and scholarly editions. The catalogue does not aim to represent all public-domain works but to curate a focused collection of 91 titles that offer diverse perspectives on war, nation-building, social life, and psychological experience.
Scope and selection
All works are drawn from Project Gutenberg’s digital repository. Selection emphasizes firsthand accounts, regimental histories, memoirs, and contemporary analyses from the 17th to early 20th centuries. Preference is given to texts with substantial editorial value, such as those containing unique narrative voices, detailed observations, or structural features that reward close reading.
Source attribution
Every book record identifies Project Gutenberg as the publisher. No alterations have been made to the original content; editorial notes and reading guides are clearly distinguished from the source text. Links to the full edition are provided on each book page.
Bibliographic records
Each record includes the title as it appears in the source edition, author name(s), publisher, subject keywords (from Library of Congress), target-reader designation, and a catalogue note. The catalogue notes are prepared as supplementary catalogue material and reflects the work’s structure, themes, and context.
Category assignment
Works are assigned to four thematic categories: Revolutions; Modern Nations; Social History; and World Events. Categories are based on shared subject matter, narrative approach, and historical period. They serve as navigation aids and are not definitive literary judgments.
Editorial reading context
All catalogue notes and reading guides are written by INGOF Catalogue, the literary critic. These materials are based on close reading of the works and aim to provide useful context without claiming exhaustive analysis. the catalogue project does not assert that every book has been read in full, but each has been substantially examined.
Edition facts and text measurements
Where available, edition notes include the original publication date and any relevant bibliographic details. Text measurements such as word count or page count are not systematically recorded. The digital edition is identical to the Project Gutenberg source.
Recommendations and related works
Each category guide recommends three works with a concrete reason for each recommendation. These selections are based on catalogue metadata and thematic relevance of the works’ representative value and interest. Related works may be suggested in catalogue notes but are not exhaustive.
Corrections and reader reports
Readers may report errors or suggest improvements via the contact page. The catalogue is maintained on a best-effort basis; corrections are reviewed periodically. No automated system is used for quality control.
Public-domain limitations
All texts are in the public domain in their country of origin. The catalogue does not guarantee copyright status for all jurisdictions. Users are responsible for verifying the legal status of any text before reuse.
Accessibility and readable presentation
HTML pages are designed for readability with semantic markup, clear headings, and minimal visual clutter. No images, scripts, or external resources are used. The catalogue is optimized for screen readers and text-based browsers.
Independence and editorial responsibility
The catalogue is independently edited and not affiliated with any institution or publisher. Editorial decisions are solely those of the catalogue project. No advertising, sponsorship, or commercial relationships influence the selection or presentation of works.
What the catalogue does not claim
The catalogue does not claim peer review, legal certification, university affiliation, or professional librarian credentials. It does not assert that every book was manually read in full. It does not guarantee copyright status. Catalogue commentary may use automated assistance during preparation or revision; source records remain the reference point for important bibliographic details.
Ongoing maintenance
The catalogue is periodically reviewed for broken links and updated as needed. New titles may be added, and categories may be revised. The editorial standards page is versioned and may be updated without notice.
